Your Questions About Team Building Activities

Mandy asks…
What new team building activities are there?
I’m looking for something new and innovative for a team of around 20 people within two hours of London. We’ve done most activities commonly on offer and whatever we choose needs to have tangible team building benefits as well as be enjoyable.

I went to a leadership class one time. The most interesting thing that they did was a trust walk. You match in pairs and it would really be interesting if it was people from different parts of the company or adversaries. One is blindfolded and the other takes the person around for a period of time. Then they reverse their roles. It was interesting to hear the comments afterwords as we discussed the effects. To some people it was life changing. To others it was a nice experience. What it was, was a simple, cheap, character building, wall breaking experience for many. One man did not trust women. Who picks him – a woman. He spend the time waiting to get hurt. Nothing bad happened and they parted. He was having trouble with his wife and decided to address the issue as soon as he got home. If the wife did not listen, he was going to find his partner. Many others had lesser effects even me.

What are some good team building activities for a teenage youth group?
We are planning on having a “Survivor Retreat” and I would like to have some good physical activities for each “tribe” and team building ideas.

Obstacle courses are fun. But try adding an extra twist you know? Make it difficult. I know this from experience. My class went to a camp, and had to complete many obstacle courses with an added twist, we had to learn to trust each other and work together to complete it. We also had to complete a puzzle together. This taught us to listen to one another, and keep trying.
Or have the kids divide into pairs, and navigate through a maze or race with a blindfold. This helped us listen and trust our partner.
This one was extra hard. We had a log, we each stood on it in a line. The catch? We had to switch our positions on the log in order from oldest to youngest, without talking or stepping on the ground. We had to figure out how we could maneuver around each other. This part came quickly. (We used our fingers to counts out months and days so we could figure out the right order) It was hard but fun!

What are some fun team building activities?
I’m trying out for an officer position of my high school’s drill team, and I need to come up with some team building activities to create a stronger team bond and build trust.

The human knot. Also play the game where there is a line and the first three people have to lay down and make an A. Then the second three make a B and then they go to the back of the line, so the threes rotate through…. It is fun. And people figure out the threes and strategies to make it go faster. Also with introductions, make people line up in alphabetical order and make them introduce themselves with the first letter of their name and an animal. Just the same animal cannot be used twice. Like my name is Tara so I would be Tara the tiger or Tara the tarantula or whatever…. I hope that helps and makes sence.

Does anyone have some middle school team building activities?
I am a middle school coach and when my girls feel like a team they play better, but I’ve run out of team building activities (tried the human knot and the trust fall). Does anyone have a simple team building drill, game or activity that I could use?

Yigly Admin answers:
Get the girls to make up an ace (it’s after you serve it and the other team doesnt touch it and you score a point. The team makes up a beat that they do with there feet.) It gets them to work together as a team and listen to one another. It worked for our team.

David asks…
Where do people look for team building activities?
As a martial arts studio we have a great activity that has been used as a team building exercise for local businesses. They found us simply by word of mouth, but where would I go if I wanted to advertise that we do such things? What would you look for if you were looking for a team building activity for your team at work?

Yigly Admin answers:
Area wide metro tech schools in your area. Any business training institute in your area. Community action agencies or Community colleges. Good Luck . . . .
