Your Questions About Team Building Activities For The Workplace

Susan asks…
Addiction in the Workplace….?
My boyfriend is very close to becoming a business owner and running his own office. He has a team of people working for him now and needs only 2 more solid business partner before relocating and opening his own office in Toronto.
It’s a young group of good looking, motivated business people. My boyfriend is 36, and the people who are his team members are 23-28. Also most of them are single except for 1 of the guys I think. So basically drinking plays a major part in their after work activities. I understand its a social thing to do and in moderation is OK.
However my boyfriend has always had a drinking problem as long as we’ve been together, so I find this an extremely lethal mix for him, because he will NEVER turn down a chance to go out drinking, and it seems like EVERY night his team wants to have a few drinks after work.
At home my boyfriend and I have many problems surrounded around drinking, but because he uses business as an excuse for drinking he thinks its justified behavior and not a big deal and necessary for team building.
I agree there needs to be time outside of work for team building purposes but I also feel Alcohol is really high risk activity to be mixing with business. In my opinion when it’s the boss who has a problem, from a corporate perspective, it destroys morales and sets the standard for unacceptable behavior from other members of top management.
If my boyfriend wants to run his business successfully I feel the drinking needs to be eliminated, especially for my boyfriends sake. I feel he will fail running his own business if he doesn’t set the right example now that drinking with co workers and business partners regularly (not on special occasions) is going to destroy everything he has worked so hard to get.
My boyfriend has told me he isn’t going to drink anymore, we had a major fight this weekend and he said “I can’t do this anymore… drinking causes way to many problems in our relationship and I don’t want to lose you over it” … I’m hopeful, but he has said this before, and as time goes on and he forgets what we fought about and things get better, he’ll justify drinking “sometimes” and will think because he was good for a while that he should be trusted to drink again etc. (typical alcoholic behavior)
Anyway, how can my boyfriend get the message across to his business partners that the regular drinking is NOT appropriate for business even though he’s allowed this behavior for so long?
Also after work his business partners tend to encourage him to join them for drinks after work, how can he say no without coming out and saying “I’m not drinking anymore because I have a problem”. I know he feels his ego will be crushed if he has to tell people he isn’t drinking anymore because of a problem, but if he doesn’t say its because he has a problem then his business partners think its because I’ve got him whipped.
HELP PLEASE!!!
